Each morning and afternoon during our stay at the Massai Mara, you’ll have the opportunity to embark on guided safaris in safe, comfortable vans. Creatures great and small, bright and beautiful, wild and wonderful, roam freely across this vast, ever-changing land.

And every day brings an entirely new adventure. Will you witness the startled flight of a herd of graceful impala? Watch hippopotamus waddle slowly down to the river for a bath? Or will you encounter one of Africa’s most breathtaking sights: the majestic elephant?

The African elephant is the world’s largest creature on land, easily weighing over six tons. Elephants are very social animals and travel in herds that can consist of up to a thousand elephants.

Although their sight is poor, elephants have an excellent sense of hearing. And they are almost completely dependent on their trunks, which they use for eating, drinking, scent, communication, washing, cleaning and carrying.

The elephant is one of “The Big Five,” a term originally coined for the five African animals that hunters treasured the most. The lion, leopard, cape buffalo and rhino also belong in this category, and hopefully you’ll be able to see all five of these fascinating animals on our African Safari.
